Mozilla explained in their FAQ that the name "Firefox" an alias for the red panda, but they don't mention that they had the red panda in mind... actually, another FAQ entry says that they just used this name because Firefox was formerly called "Firebird" - they just looked for a similar name. Anyway, I guess...
